Your HbA1c Says 5.8. What Does That Number Actually Mean?

An HbA1c of 5.8% sits in the CDC prediabetes range. It is a three-month average, not a diagnosis by itself.

You open a blood-test report and see it: HbA1c 5.8%. Is that good, bad, or something to worry about? The useful answer starts with what the test actually measures.

HbA1c is not a snapshot

Blood glucose changes through the day. It rises after you eat and can fall between meals. HbA1c works differently.

The A1C test estimates average blood sugar over roughly the previous three months. It measures the percentage of hemoglobin in red blood cells that has glucose attached. Because red blood cells typically circulate for about three months, HbA1c gives a longer view than a single glucose reading. That is why it is used to identify prediabetes and diabetes, and to monitor people who already have diabetes.

So what does 5.8% mean?

The CDC uses these ranges:

  • Below 5.7%: normal
  • 5.7%–6.4%: prediabetes
  • 6.5% or higher: diabetes

An HbA1c of 5.8% falls in the prediabetes range. That is information, not a self-diagnosis. Clinicians look at the whole picture and may repeat the test or use another one. Severe anemia, kidney or liver disease, some blood disorders, recent blood loss or transfusion, and pregnancy can affect how accurate an A1C result is.

Why the longer view matters

Think of a glucose reading as a photograph of one moment. HbA1c is closer to a three-month summary. You can have a typical glucose number on one morning while the average over the previous months tells a different story.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recognizes HbA1c, fasting plasma glucose, and an oral glucose tolerance test as screening options for prediabetes and type 2 diabetes in certain adults. The more useful question is not only whether blood sugar is “normal.” It is what this number says about health over time.
