Monocytes (percent)

The percentage of white cells that are monocytes. They become macrophages and clean up debris after infection and injury.

What it measures

Monocytes circulate briefly, then settle into tissues as macrophages and dendritic cells. They engulf debris, present antigens, and help end an inflammatory response. The percent is their slice of the differential, usually a small one.

Why it is on the panel

A modest monocyte rise is a common recovery signal after an infection. It is easy to overlook and usually benign when the rest of the CBC is settling.

How to read it

Compare the percent with the absolute monocyte count. Chronic infection, inflammatory disease, and recovery from neutropenia are settings where monocytes take a larger share.

When it runs higher

The share can rise during recovery from infection, in tuberculosis and some other chronic infections, in inflammatory bowel disease, and in some blood disorders. A small bump on a single screen is common.

When it runs lower

A low monocyte percent is seldom a finding by itself. Steroids and the immediate phase of an acute illness can lower it.

How to use this page

This page explains what the measurement is for. It is educational. Your Healiam report includes the reference interval for your age and sex, and a clinician reads that result with your history, medicines, and the rest of the panel. Talk with a clinician before changing diet, supplements, or treatment because of a number on a report.
