The number of platelets, the cell fragments that start a clot. Too few raises bleeding risk. Too many changes clotting risk in a different way.
What it measures
Platelets are made in the bone marrow from large cells called megakaryocytes. They circulate for about a week and plug small injuries. The count is the number of those fragments in a volume of blood. Clumping in the tube can make the count look falsely low, which is why an unexpected result is sometimes redrawn.
Why it is on the panel
A preventive panel catches both a quietly low count and a high one you would not feel. Many people with a mildly abnormal platelet count have no symptoms at all.
How to read it
Read the count with MPV and the immature platelet fraction. A low count with large, young platelets often means platelets are being used up and the marrow is responding. A low count with a flat immature fraction can mean production is down.
When it runs higher
Iron deficiency, infection, inflammation, and recovery from bleeding commonly push the count up. This is called reactive thrombocytosis. Less often, a high count comes from the marrow making too many platelets on its own.
When it runs lower
A low count can follow viral illness, medicines, immune destruction, an enlarged spleen, or reduced marrow production. Mild dips are common and often repeat to normal. Counts that are very low, or falling, need prompt clinical advice, especially with bruising or bleeding.
