Diabetes

Glucose is a moment. HbA1c is a three-month average written onto hemoglobin. Together they show both the level on the morning of the draw and the pattern you have been living with. Fasting is required for the glucose categories to mean what they usually mean. A single pair of results does not diagnose diabetes. Repeated results, and sometimes a clinician’s confirmatory test, are how that diagnosis is made.

What this group shows

  • Fasting glucose under 100 mg/dL is the usual adult target. 100–125 mg/dL is the prediabetes range. 126 mg/dL or higher is the diabetes range on a fasting sample.
  • HbA1c under 5.7% is the typical non-diabetic band on this panel. 5.7–6.4% is the prediabetes range. 6.5% or higher is the diabetes range.
  • The two can disagree. A recent illness, a short course of steroids, or anemia that changes red-cell life can pull them apart.

How to use this page

This page explains what the measurement is for. It is educational. Your Healiam report includes the reference interval for your age and sex, and a clinician reads that result with your history, medicines, and the rest of the panel. Talk with a clinician before changing diet, supplements, or treatment because of a number on a report.
