The thyroid sets much of the body’s metabolic pace. This group reports TSH, the pituitary signal that tells the gland to work, plus total T3 and free T4, two forms of thyroid hormone. Read together, they help separate an underactive gland, an overactive gland, and a pituitary signal that does not match the hormone levels.
What this group shows
- TSH is the most sensitive first look. It often moves before you feel a change in energy, weight, or heart rate.
- Free T4 is the unbound, available form of thyroxine. Total T3 adds the more active hormone.
- A high TSH with a low free T4 fits an underactive thyroid. A low TSH with a high free T4 fits an overactive one. Mixed patterns need a clinician.
